JAYADEVA HOSPITAL CONDUCTS OPEN HEART SURGERY ON INDONESIAN CHILD
HOSPITAL TO PROMOTE HEALTH TOURISM
Five years old child Master Muhammad Arval from financially constrained family (Rikshaw Puller), Indonesia underwent successful Open Heart Surgery for blue heart disease at the Jayadeva Institute. Child’s symptoms were in the form of bluish discolouration of skin, blood, tiredness and loss of consciousness.
The child was diagnosed to have birth defects involving his heart from 7th day of his birth. He was noticed to be blue from 1 month of age and took the baby to Jakarta. He was diagnosed to have Tetralogy of Fallot. At the age of 2 ½ years, small operation (BT Shunt) was done to improve the symptoms. However in the last few months, there was worsening of symptoms. Local Doctors in Indonesia have suggested Total correction of the defects through Open Heart Surgery, which would cost approximately Rs. 5 Lakhs.
Parents contacted the local Rotarian at Indonesia for financial help. Rotary International District, Indonesia under a goodwill programme of Rotary International District 3190, Bangalore have decided to help this child for getting operated at Bangalore. This surgery was conducted on Wednesday 28th July 2010, successfully by the team headed by Dr Seetharama Bhat, Dr. Devanand,Dr. A M Jagadeesh and others.
According to Dr. C N Manjunath, about 1000 babies born, 2-3 will have this disease called Tetralogy of Fallot which has heart hole and narrowing of the valve which carries blood to the lungs. This causes mixing of impure blood with pure blood causing discolouration of white blood.
Rotary International District Bangalore has entered into an Memorandum of Understanding with Jayadeva Institute and is sponsoring for 110 Open Heart Surgeries for the needy children, every year. Already 80 Surgeries are completed.
Rotarian President Sri. Karigowda, Rotarians Sri. Nagendra & Sri. B V Kumar from RID 3190 said that we will extend financial assistance to many needy heart patients from Pakistan, Srilanka, Malaysian countries and which will be operated in Bangalore at Jayadeva Hospital. He also said that Jayadeva Hospital is known for its high quality services with affordable cost.
The child had an uneventful recovery. The parents of Master Muhammad Arval are happy that the boy is new pink and walking around without tiredness. They are also very much impressed by the facilities, hospitality and the concern of the hospital staff. They never felt it is a Government hospital.
Dr. C N Manjunath said that this child is similar to the Pakistani child operated few years back in one of the corporate hospital in Bangalore. The patient will be discharged within 2-3 days from the hospital.
