This Conference will focus specially on Non-Surgical treatment of Congenital Heart Defects and structural heart disease.  This will be held at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research between 12th to 14th August 2011.  For every 1000 children born, 6-7 are born with heart holes or heart defects due to developmental anomaly, which accounts for 10% of infant mortality.  Two decades ago these defects / heart holes treated by surgery only.  Now due to recent advances in the technology as well as skills, most of these heart holes can be closed without surgery by Umbrella Devices.  These ailments today account for nearly for 30-40% of the hospital admission.

According to Dr. C N Manjunath, Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute & Chairman of the Conference, nearly 400 Interventional Cardiologists, guest faculty from Brazil, Germany, China and from all across the country are attending this Conference.  During this Conference, Live Case demonstration will be conducted on 30 Children/adolescents using Umbrella Devices.  The Umbrella Devices are inserted through the leg veins and the heart holes will be closed under the X-Ray guidance (Cathlab).  The advantages of this technique is no need for surgery, blood transfusion is not required, no scar on the chest wall which is a great boon particularly for female children, can resume regular activities in 2 days.  The cost of each device ranges between Rs. 40,000/- to One Lakh depending on the nature of the disease.  All  poor children will be given free device in this workshop.
Step by step demonstration of non-surgical procedure at the workshop will be a great help for the attending cardiologists which ultimately improve their skill and benefit patients at large.

Suvarna Arogya Chaitanya Scheme introduced by central/State Government under which students from 1st to 10th Standard get free treatment.  Ever since this scheme was introduced, number of children undergoing non-surgical closure of heart defects has increased.  This Scheme is helping poor children to a greater extent.

Dr. Krishna Kumar, Paediatric Cardiologist from Cochin is the Course Director.  Dr. Jayaranganath, Paediatric Cardiologist from Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular sciences and Research is the Organizing Secretary.
